What is Eid?
Eid is an Arabic word, which means festival or celebration. Eid symbolises gratitude, joy and sharing. The day starts with prayer, meeting family and friends, relishing on festive food and exchanging gifts. We mainly celebrate two Eids, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.
After 30 days of fasting in Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal. Shawwal is the tenth month in Islamic calendar. Fitra or Fitrah is given to the poor before the Eid prayer. Zakat (charity) is the main essence of this eid. This Eid is also called as seviyan ki eid, as sheer khorma is the star recipe of this festival.
Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. This Eid is also called as Bakrid or Big Eid or Greater Eid. Eid al-Adha begins with a special prayer called ‘Salat al-Eid’. After special prayer follows sermon called khutbah. This is a ‘festival of sacrifice’.

5 Tips for Eid Day Cooking
Though the tips mentioned below sound simple, believe me following these tips will surely help you in planning a good Eid Party.
- Plan ahead: It is good to start to plan 3-4 days ahead of Eid. Write the recipes in a book or phone notes and make a grocery list accordingly. If Eid Menu is prepared, then half of the task is done.
- Stock up the ingredients: As soon as the grocery list is ready, shop for the necessary ingredients and store them accordingly. Along with the ingredients shop for items which will be required to set Eid Table. For example, candles, flowers, napkins, tissues, hand towels, etc.
- Grind the masalas and get spice powders ready: Ginger-Garlic Paste and Garam Masala are two main ingredients in most of the Indian Non-Veg Curries. So, prepare these in advance. Along with these make roasted cumin powder and roasted coriander powder, as they come handy. A day before, make brista (fried onion) and tomato puree and refrigerate them. Make big bowl of curd and refrigerate it. Fresh curd can be used in making biryani, raita, curries, lassi, etc.
- Cut, Clean and Chop: Clean and cut coriander leaves and mint leaves. Refrigerate them in zip lock bags. If possible, peel and cut vegetables and stock them up in freezer safe bowls.
- Get your serving dishes ready: Most important, get your serving dishes, plates, cutlery, napkins, tablecloth and mats ready a day before. Wash, wipe and leave to dry. If using candles, flowers, or other table decorative items, then keep them ready.
I use artificial flowers along with candles to decorate my Eid table. I wash and starch the flowers 2-3 days before. Along with that I polish and clean the flower vases.
