Ingredients for Savory Oats Porridge
Oats – Choosing the right oats is the first and most important step in making perfect savory oats porridge. I recommend using rolled oats or steel-cut oats for a creamy and hearty texture. Quick-cooking oats are also a great option if you’re short on time.
Onion – Adds base, flavour and aroma to the recipe.
Green Chili – Adds spice and heat.
Curry Leaves – Adds flavour, aroma and unique taste.
Peanuts – Adds crunch and taste.
Optional Toppings
While savory oats porridge is delicious on its own, there are plenty of toppings you can add to take your bowl to the next level. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Roasted chickpeas or cashews
- Chopped fresh herbs, like cilantro or coriander
- Sliced raw mango
- Fried egg
- Sautéed paneer
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When it comes to making savory oatmeal porridge, there are a few common mistakes that many people make. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid:
Overcooking the Oats
One of the most common mistakes people make when making savory oatmeal porridge is overcooking the oats. Overcooked oats can become mushy and lose their texture, resulting in a less enjoyable eating experience. To avoid this, be sure to follow the cooking instructions carefully and keep an eye on the oats as they cook.
Not Adding Enough Flavor
Another mistake people make is not adding enough flavor to their savory oatmeal porridge. Oatmeal on its own can be quite bland, so it’s important to add plenty of herbs and flavorings to make it more interesting. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations of flavors until you find the perfect mix for your tastes. You can add grated carrot or beets or veggies like beans, peas, etc to enhance the flavor of the porridge.
Using the Wrong Type of Oats
Not all oats are created equal, and using the wrong type of oats can result in a less-than-ideal outcome. For savory oatmeal porridge, it’s best to use steel-cut oats or rolled oats, as they have a firmer texture that holds up well to savory flavors. Instant oats or quick-cooking oats can become mushy and lose their texture, so it’s best to avoid them.
Adding Too Much Liquid
Adding too much liquid to your savory oatmeal porridge can result in a soupy mess. Be sure to follow the ratio of oats to liquid carefully, and adjust as needed based on the specific recipe you’re using. If your porridge does end up too runny, you can always add more oats to thicken it up.
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a delicious and satisfying bowl of savory oatmeal porridge that’s packed with flavor and texture.
