About This Recipe
Seasons sweet and juicy mangoes are here and there’s no better time to indulge in the luscious flavors that this tropical fruit has to offer. During my childhood, the first batch of mangoes will always be Rasalu. Rasalu are the popular juice mangoes from the Andhra region. Ripe rasalu are yellow in color and are extremely sweet with fiber throughout. When these are at home, it is either the raw juice directly from the mango or milkshake or aamras or lassi is always in the menu.
Nowadays, you can find many different kinds of mangoes. Each kind has a special taste, texture, flavor and feel. From the smooth and creamy Imam Pasand to the tangy and fibrous Totapuri, mangoes offer an extensive palette of flavors to explore. Slice up for a fresh fruit salad, puree into a rich milkshake, or make savory dishes like chutneys and salsas. Mangoes offer endless possibilities for culinary creativity.
Nutrition In Mangoes
Moreover, aside from their delightful taste, mangoes are also packed with nutrients. They are a great source of vitamins A and C, which can help boost your immune system. They contain dietary fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health.
Mangoes contain small amounts of other nutrients such as vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, and copper, all of which play various roles in the body’s functioning.
Mango Milkshake (2-Ways)
Some recipes are so versatile, that you can come up with endless variations of making them. This creamy, luscious and super cool mango milkshake do fall under that category. In this post, I am sharing with you two of my favorite versions of making mango milkshake. Regular mango milkshake with ice cream and other one is mildly sweet mango milkshake without ice cream.
With ice cream or without, a mango milkshake maintains its delightful taste, capturing the essence of tropical bliss in a glass. The ripe mangoes bring about a natural sweetness and a rich, creamy texture that’s undeniably refreshing.
When ice cream is added, it takes the indulgence up a notch, delivering an even creamier and more luxurious experience. On the other hand, opting for a milkshake without ice cream can be equally satisfying. Especially if you prefer to enjoy the pure, unadulterated flavor of mangoes with a lighter, more health-conscious approach. Whether it’s a hot summer day or a moment of craving something sweet, a mango milkshake, both ways, is a delightful treat that’s hard to resist.
Mango Milkshake Ingredients
Mangoes – Mangoes are the star ingredient of this milkshake. Adds sweet, tropical flavor and vibrant color. Opt for ripe mangoes, preferably ones with a smooth texture and rich aroma. Peeling and dicing the mangoes make them easier to blend into a smooth consistency. If available, use Andhra special Rasalu mangoes. These are known for their juicy pulp and sweet taste, are an excellent choice for a more intense mango flavor in your milkshake. If rasalu are not available, I use Imam Pasad (Himayat Mangoes).
Cold Milk (dairy or plant-based) – Milk adds creaminess and helps bind all the ingredients together. You can either prefer dairy milk or plant-based milk like almond or coconut milk. Full cream dairy milk adds richness, where as plant based milk gives a lighter alternative. Ensure it’s well-chilled to create a refreshing beverage.
Sugar – Adds sweetness to the mango milkshake, enhancing the natural flavor of the mangoes. The amount of sugar can be adjusted according to personal preference and the sweetness of the mangoes used. Start with a small amount and gradually increase to achieve the desired level of sweetness.
Vanilla Ice Cream – For an extra indulgent and creamy texture, vanilla ice cream is a delightful addition to mango milkshake. It lends a rich flavor and luxurious mouthfeel, elevating the drink to dessert-like status. However, it can be omitted for a lighter version of the milkshake or substituted with dairy-free alternatives.
Cardamom Powder – Adds a subtle yet distinctive flavor to the mango milkshake. Complements the sweetness of the mangoes with its warm and aromatic notes. This optional ingredient enhances the overall taste experience, giving the milkshake an unique twist. Adjust the amount according to personal preference or omit it entirely if preferred.
Tips & Variations
Use ripe, flavorful mangoes: Choose ripe mangoes with a fragrant aroma and vibrant color for the best flavor. Varieties like Alphonso, Kesari, Himsagar, Imam Pasad, etc work well for mango milkshakes due to their sweetness and smooth texture.
Adjust sweetness to taste: Taste the milkshake as you blend. Adjust the amount of sugar or sweetener according to your preference or depending on the natural sweetness of the mangoes. You can also use honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar as alternatives to sugar.
Add a hint of spice: Enhance the flavor profile of your mango milkshake by adding a pinch of ground cardamom, cinnamon, or nutmeg. These spices complement the sweetness of the mangoes and add a subtle depth of flavor.
Garnish creatively: Elevate the presentation of your mango milkshake by garnishing it with sliced mangoes. Sprinkle of ground cinnamon or cardamom, or a dollop of whipped cream. Fresh mint leaves, edible flowers, or a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce can also add a decorative touch. You can even add chopped almonds, pistachios and dry rose petals as garnish.
Adding Essence – Try adding vanilla or mango essence for additional flavor.
Adding Ice Cubes – Ice cubes give the mango milkshake its characteristic chill and refreshing texture. They help cool down the drink and provide a frosty consistency, making it perfect for hot summer days. Generally, I do not prefer adding ice cubes to milkshakes. I feel ice cubes thin the consistency of the shake.
Serve with accompaniments: Pair your mango milkshake with crunchy snacks like roasted nuts, granola clusters, or biscotti for a satisfying contrast in textures. Fresh fruit skewers or cheese platters also make delightful accompaniments for a balanced snack or dessert.
