About This Recipe,
During fasting days, it is difficult to choose quick and healthy recipes all the time for Iftar. Recipes like salad, soups, drinks and porridges are always welcoming on iftar table. If you are cooking for a small family or big, recipes which can be prepared ahead will save a lot of time during fasting days.
As fast go from sunrise to sunset, providing the body with required nutrients is necessary to maintain good health. Recipes like kala chana salad is not only filling but also will provide nutrients required for the body.
During fasting days, I always keep a big box of boiled kabuli chana (white chickpeas) and kala chana (black chickpeas) in the freezer. They come very handy, when you are running out of time and also when you have unexpected guests at home.
What is Iftar?
Iftar (Arabic: إفطار), refers to the evening meal when we break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Dates are the first to consume. Depending on the country and their relative traditions the recipes for Iftar vary.
People of Hyderabad, India relish on much popular haleem, chana dal, fruit chaat, samosa, rooh afza etc; as it is perfect to boost the energy levels and filling too.
Andhra Iftar Foods are like Ganji (Kanji), Pakodi, Aloo Bhajiya, Mirchi Bajji, etc; When staying in community, sharing iftar is mandatory.
Festivals, fasts, celebrations and events will come to life when we get to celebrate with whole family and friends.
Kala Chana Salad | Kala Chana Chaat
It is boring to think what to cook for only two people and that too when one has to go office and other has to stay at home. Times like that a simple salad with a healthy touch like Kala Chana is quite filling and satisfying.
This is simple, easy and zero-oil salad recipe is my all time favorite. If you have boiled chana at home, then making this salad will take only 5 minutes.
All you need to do is to add onions, tomatoes, green chillies, lemon juice and coriander leaves. Toss these all with salt, pepper powder and chaat maala. Tada! salad is ready!

Main Ingredients For Kala Chana Salad
Kala Chana | Black Chickpeas – These are incredible source of plant-protein. Black chickpeas are widely used in Indian cuisine. Kadala Curry (Kadala Karri), which is served with puttu or poori is a very popular south Indian curry, made with black chickpeas.
On my last visit to Hyderabad, I came across a pani poori stall, where the stuffing of pani poori is of kala chana. The taste was just amazing! Sometimes, kala chana is used as stuffing in other chaats like dahi poori, samosa chaat, muntha masala, etc;
Onion – Adds crunch and taste.
Tomato – Adds juicy, sweet-sour taste to salad.
Cucumber – Brings refreshing taste and juicy crunch in salad.
Green Chillies – Adds heat and spice.
Pomegranate Kernels – Adding pomegranate kernels is purely optional. These kernels add flavour, taste and nutrition. I love the taste of pomegranate in salad.
Lemon Juice – Brings tangy taste in salad.
Chaat Masala – Adds flavour and taste.
Nutrition in Kala Chana | Black Chickpeas
Kala chana | black chickpeas are rich with Vitamin A, B1 and B3 and has small amount of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and Vitamin C in it. Black chickpeas prevent anaemia and boost your energy levels.
They also carry potassium, phosphorus, iron and calcium with good amount of sodium with them.
Kala Chana Salad
Simple, refreshing and healthy Kala Chana Salad (Black Chickpea Salad) for the coming summers and Ramadan Iftar...Eat fresh and be healthy.
- 1 cup Black chickpeas | Kala Chana, soaked and boiled until soft
- ½ Cucumber | Kheera
- 1 Onion, peeled and finely chopped
- 1 Tomato, deseeded and finely chopped
- 6-7 tbsp. fresh Pomegranate seeds
- 1 Green chili, deseeded and finely chopped
- 3 tbsp. fresh Lemon juice
- ½ tbsp. Pepper powder
- 2 tbsp. fresh chopped Coriander leaves
- Salt, as per taste
- ½ tbsp. Chaat Masala, optional
How To Make Kala Chana Salad
Take a bowl and add all the ingredients. Toss and serve immediately.
