About This Recipe
There used to be an ice cream vendor who stood just opposite the gate of my school. He sold orange, yellow, violet, and white ice creams, which were nothing but frozen colored sugar water on sticks. My dad warned me that the colors were made using fabric dyes, so I never dared to buy them. However, I always watched other kids buying them and ending up with colorful lips, tongues and teeth. Sometimes even staining their white shirts orange or violet. To fulfill my craving for ice pops, I decided to make my own version of frozen ice treat with strawberries but with twist.
Homemade strawberry masala pops offer a delightful blend of sweetness, spiciness, and juiciness, all without any artificial colors or preservatives. Enjoy the refreshing taste of fresh strawberries in every bite. I love making popsicles, especially during the summer, and I’m always experimenting with new flavors. This time, I decided to add a hint of chaat masala for an extra spicy kick, and it turned out to be absolutely delicious.
Experimenting with different flavors adds an exciting twist to each batch, making summer treats even more enjoyable. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply looking to cool off after a warm day, these homemade popsicles are the perfect treat to savor!
Strawberry Masala Pops Ingredients
Fresh Strawberries – Strawberries are a beloved summer fruit known for their vibrant red color, juicy texture, and sweet flavor profile. When selecting strawberries, look for ones that are firm, plump, and have a deep red color with green caps. Avoid strawberries that are mushy or have signs of mold.
Hulled strawberries have had their green stems and leaves removed, leaving behind just the juicy fruit. Chopping them into smaller pieces helps them blend more easily in recipes. Packed with essential nutrients like vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, strawberries make a healthy addition to any diet.
In this recipe, fresh strawberries will provide the base flavor and natural sweetness for the popsicles. Gives a refreshing and fruity taste.
Honey – Honey is a natural sweetener that has been used for centuries in culinary applications and traditional medicine. Known for its distinct flavor, viscosity, and various health benefits.
Honey is sweeter than sugar and has a rich, complex taste that can range from floral and fruity to earthy. In addition to its sweetening properties, honey also offers antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Popular ingredient in natural remedies and skincare products.
In this recipe, we use honey to sweeten the popsicles and also to complement the tartness of the strawberries.
Chaat Masala – A popular spice blend used in Indian cuisine, known for its tangy, salty, and slightly spicy flavor profile. The blend typically includes a combination of spices such as cumin, coriander, dried mango powder (amchur), black salt, and chili powder, among others.
Chaat masala is commonly used to season various street foods and snacks in India. Adds a burst of flavor and complexity to dishes. Its tangy and savory notes make it a versatile seasoning. Enhance the taste of fruits, salads, chaats (savory snacks), and even beverages.
In this recipe, we add a dash of chaat masala to the popsicle mixture to introduce a subtle spicy and tangy twist. Chaat masala also helps in balancing the sweetness of the strawberries and honey with its unique flavor profile.
Strawberry Masala Pops
Taste
- The taste of strawberry masala pops is a delicious blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy notes.
- Initially, you’ll experience the vibrant sweetness of fresh strawberries, bursting with juicy flavor.
- As you indulge further, a subtle tanginess from the chaat masala emerges, adding an intriguing twist to the sweetness.
- The spice from the chaat masala is not overpowering. It enhances the overall flavor profile with a mild kick, creating a delightful contrast to the sweetness of the strawberries.
Color
- The color of strawberry masala pops is a vibrant shade of pink or red. Reminiscent of the natural hue of ripe strawberries.
- The popsicles exude an inviting and appetizing appearance, with their rich and lively coloration.
- The addition of chaat masala may impart subtle specks or flecks of darker color.
Texture
- The texture of strawberry masala pops is smooth, creamy, and slightly icy, reminiscent of traditional popsicles.
- As you take a bite or lick, you’ll encounter the soft and velvety consistency of the frozen strawberry mixture.
- The popsicles may contain small bits or flecks of strawberry pulp, adding a textural contrast to the otherwise uniform texture.
- Despite their icy nature, the popsicles maintain a creamy mouthfeel, thanks to the natural creaminess of blended strawberries.
Flavor
- The flavor of strawberry masala pops is multi-dimensional and complex.
- It starts with the unmistakable essence of ripe strawberries, offering a luscious and fruity flavor that’s both refreshing and familiar.
- The addition of chaat masala introduces savory and tangy undertones, elevating the popsicles with its aromatic blend of spices.
- Each lick or bite reveals layers of flavor. From the initial burst of sweetness to the lingering warmth of the spice blend, creating a memorable taste experience.
NOTE: For additional flavor, I added, crushed strawberry flavored ‘soulful‘ ragi flakes. Adding these flakes is purely optional. You can add chopped strawberry pieces for juicy crunch.
The only downside to popsicles is the freezing time. While it typically takes 5-6 hours for them to set, these blushing berry pops vanish in just 5-6 minutes!
