About This Recipe
We love popcorn and we also love trying new flavours in popcorn. Popcorn is always been part of long drives, movie nights, after school treat or rain day snack. I love to try savory popcorn recipes and where as my little one loves sweet ones.
On one rainy evening, when I picked up my little one from school, she asked me, what’s there in snack? Being busy with webinar and project work, I could not make anything in snack. When I asked her, what she wants to eat in snack, she said, some hot chocolate or popcorn.
Yeah! I said, I will make you both. As it was raining, I too was craving for something savory and spicy. And also, at the same time, a snack that can be made in less than 10 minutes.
Coming home, I opened the instant popcorn pack to microwave it, but eyes fell on Achari Masala Powder. I could not resist my temptation and added a spoon of achari masala spice powder to my popcorn and viola! Achari Masala Popcorn is born. From then on this spicy pickle flavoured popcorn is regular in my house.
Different Ways To Make Popcorn
Making popcorn at home is super easy and rewarding. I make popcorn in four different ways.
Stove-Top Method: In three simple and easy steps, you can make popcorn on stove-top. First take a thick bottom pan or pressure cooker and add butter or oil or ghee to it.
When it warms up add popcorn kernels and stir gently. Place the lid with little gap. Leave this on low flame for 10-12 minutes. Turn off the flame once the popping sound stops. Shake the pan in between to ensure even popping of kernels.
Microwave Method: Take a microwave safe bowl and lid. Add butter and popcorn kernels to the bowl. Stir well. Place this on high in microwave for 3-4 minutes. Ta-da popcorn is ready!!
Instant Pot Method: Set the instant pot on saute mode and press till it reads hot. Now add butter or ghee and let it melt. After 2 minutes add popcorn kernels and using a rubber spatula, gently give this a mix.
Place clear glass lid and cook for 4-5 minutes. Turn off instant pot and leave for 2-3 minutes, before opening the lid. Serve immediately.
Air-Fryer Method: Pre-heat air-fryer at 2000C. Brush the air-fryer basket with oil and add popcorn kernels. Spread the kernels in single layer in basket. Cook for 5-6 minutes on 2000C. Remove and serve immediately.
NOTE: The amount, time and temperature totally depends on the brand of the appliance, product and capacity.
Main Ingredients In Making Achari Masala Popcorn
Popcorn Kernels: Use good quality popcorn kernels. These are easily available in any local or online grocery stores. For this recipe, you can use instant popcorn like ACT-II or normal corn kernels. If using Act-II, then use butter lover’s popcorn pack only. Other flavours may not bring the best flavour of achari masala spice.
Butter: To make popcorn buttery add butter otherwise, you can use any flavourless oil. Sometimes, I use sunflower or canola oil. You can even use ghee (clarified butter).
Achari Masala Powder: Spicy, aromatic and extremely flavourful achari masala powder is combination of Indian pickle spices. This powder is easily available in grocery stores and you can even conveniently make this at home. I have shared the recipe of achari masala powder in my Achari Chicken Recipe. Do check it, if you want to make your own spice mix.
Salt: Just a pinch to balance the flavours.
