Few days back, I have come across this recipe in the cookbook Southern Spice by Chandra Padmanabhan. Simple ingredients and easy recipe tempted me to try this recipe. Except chutney and spice powders (karam podi), I have never made anything with sesame and was wondering how this will taste like. But believe me, this is one of the tastiest rice recipe, I have ever made. Do give this a try!

Tips and Variations
- The most important part in this recipe is roasting of sesame seeds.
- Always remember to roast sesame seeds on low flame only.
- Stir continuously, sesame seeds will get evenly roasted and you can avoid burning.
- I used peanuts, you can use roasted cashew nuts too.
- If possible use sesame oil or peanut oil in making this rice recipe.
- Adding sesame or peanut oil will bring good flavour in sesame rice.
Can I store this sesame spice mixture?
Yes, definitely, you can store this spice mixture. Here are few tips to follow,
- Make the spice mixture a day ahead and store it in an air tight container. This will help you in making this rice in no time.
- Leftover spice powder, can be stored in clean, dry air tight jar. You can use this whenever needed.
- You can even sprinkle this on stir-fries like potato, brinjal and okra.
- I sprinkled this spice mix on potato fry (in the picture) and it turned out yum.
Spicy Sesame Rice

Ingredients
- 1 cup Rice, cooked and cooled
- 1 tbsp. Salt
TO GRIND:
- ½ cup white Sesame seeds | Til
- 2 tbsp. grated dry Coconut
- 4 dry Red Chillies
TEMPERING/TADKA:
- 2 tbsp. Peanuts
- 1 tbsp. Mustard seeds,
- ½ tbsp. Cumin/Jeera
- 2 dry Red Chillies, halved
- 1 tbsp. Urad dal
- 1 tbsp. Chana dal
- 10 Curry leaves
- Oil
Instructions
How to make Sesame Rice
- Dry roast sesame seeds and dry coconut individually for 2-3 minutes on low flame and set aside.
- Then add oil to a heavy bottom cooking vessel, to this add dry red chilies and fry till fragrant. Leave it cool.
- Now mix in roasted sesame seeds, dry coconut and fried red chilies and grind to make a fine powder.
- Mix this spice mixture with cooled rice and adjust salt.
- Heat oil and fry peanuts. When peanuts are completely fried then add one by one ingredient listed under tempering.
- Now add in rice and mix well. Leave for 1-2 minutes and turn off the flame.
- Serve hot with raita and papad.
- Add 'love' to make this sesame rice taste 'YUMMY'.
