When you travel you get chance to eat local delicacies and when you are at mom’s and mom-in-laws place you get chance to eat your favourite recipes…..but when you are back you feel to pamper yourself with just simple food as you get exhausted by the food you have eaten. When I am back to my kitchen, I start slowly by making comfort food. As I have lots of unpacking and rearranging, comfort food or simple food eases my work and keeps my appetite satisfying.
Today’s recipe is one such recipe which I feel simple and easy to make. It just takes less time to prepare and you could have satisfying meal within no time. A hot bowl of white rice is just enough to accomplish with this recipe. This recipe is rich, creamy and spicy…..One of my personal favourites….try it to taste it…..
- 250 gms. Taro root/Arbi/Arvi/Colocasia
- 1 Onion, sliced finely
- 1 Green chilli, slit lengthwise
- 4 tbsp. Dry coconut powder
- ½ tbsp. Coriander powder
- 1 tbsp. Red chilli powder
- ½ tbsp. Turmeric powder
- Salt
- Oil
- 2 tbsp. fresh Coriander leaves, trimmed
- Soak arvi in water for 10 minutes and wash thoroughly. Pressure cook for one whistle.
- Let the steam evaporate and then open the lid. Place the arvi in a colander and run cold water. (Read Notes)
- Peel the skin neatly and cut them into cubes or thick roundels (like I did in the picture). Now add dry coconut powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and set aside.
- In a heavy bottom cooking vessel, add oil and when it heats up add sliced onions, fry till translucent. Now add green chilli and fry for another minute.
- To this add spice mixed arvi and fry for 2-3 minutes till the raw smell of dry coconut disappears. Now add half a glass of water (adjust water accordingly) and cook on low flame.
- Cook till arvi gets soft and tender. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot.
- Last but not least add your ‘love’ to make the dish ‘YUMMY’.
NOTES:
- Sometimes peeling raw arvi causes irritation in the palms and fingers, so it is advisable to boil or pressure cook.
- Once when I was peeling raw arvi, I felt heavy irritation on the palms and fingers, then I suddenly applied tamarind water/extract. This will sooth and give the cooling affect to the affected area.
- If you are not using pressure cooker, then boil the arvi in enough water, till they turn soft. If the arvi gets much soft while cooking it may turn mushy upon further cooking
